One mission, two spacecraft, three people

Use the Apollo 11 timeline and mission record to explain how the crew reunited.

  1. Pause the replay and inspect the lunar-orbit, descent, surface and ascent milestones. Note their order.
  2. Identify Neil Armstrong as commander, Buzz Aldrin as lunar module pilot and Michael Collins as command module pilot.
  3. Use the NASA mission overview to locate Collins while Armstrong and Aldrin were on the Moon. Follow ascent and rendezvous before the return to Earth.

Why did the lunar module need to rendezvous with the command module after ascent?

Armstrong and Aldrin landed in Eagle while Collins remained in lunar orbit in Columbia. The returning lunar module reunited with Columbia so the lunar crew could transfer for the journey home.
